According to a recent court letter, FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried is experiencing difficulties concentrating during his ongoing criminal trial due to limited access to his prescribed ADHD medication, Adderall. Lawyers representing Bankman-Fried have asked the presiding judge for an extended-release version of the medication or a trial adjournment to find a suitable solution.

SBF Needs Adderall for His ADHD
Representing Bankman-Fried, Cohen & Gresser LLP submitted a letter to Judge Lewis A. Kaplan on October 15. The letter detailed the challenges faced by the defendant due to Adderall being unavailable during trial hours for the past fortnight. Bankman-Fried takes a prescribed dose of Adderall to manage attentional issues.
The letter asserted that without his medication, SBF “has not been able to concentrate at the level he ordinarily would,” leading to concerns about his meaningful participation in the defense’s case. SBF’s Adderall regimen consists of 10 mg taken three to four times a day. However, he is currently only permitted one dose at either 4 a.m. or 6 a.m., which becomes ineffective by the trial’s commencement at 9:30 a.m.

Bankman-Fried’s lawyers plan to introduce an extended-release pill on Monday, but the effectiveness of this solution remains uncertain. Moreover, it is unclear whether the Bureau of Prisons possesses the required medication. Should the extended-release pill prove inadequate, the lawyers have requested either an adjournment on Tuesday or permission to administer the medication themselves.
What Next?
Prosecutors estimate they will conclude their case around midday on October 26. Following this, the focus will shift to the defense.
The current circumstances surrounding SBF’s Adderall access raise questions about his ability to participate meaningfully in his trial. Depending on the outcome of the lawyers’ request for an extended-release pill or an adjournment, the case’s progression may be impacted. Beyond the trials, this development serves as a reminder of the importance of considering defendants’ medical needs.
