Millet in the Limelight
From leaf crisps to delectable puddings, various millet-based dishes graced the tables. The main course featured a jackfruit pastry served alongside glazed forest mushrooms, crispy millet treats, and Kerala red rice flavored with curry leaves. Bakarkhani, a thick and sweet flatbread commonly found in Mughlai cuisine, and Mumbai’s famous “Pao” or soft buns complemented the meal.
An Array of Beverages
The beverage selection included Kashmiri kahwa from the northern region, South India’s renowned filter coffee, and the iconic Darjeeling tea, providing a diverse and delightful culinary experience. It was an iconic experience for G20 Leaders Gala Dinner.
Millets: A Healthy Choice
Millet, considered a healthy alternative to wheat or rice, has gained prominence after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization declared 2023 as the International Year of Millets. Thus, this nutritious and climate-friendly superfood grain had earlier graced the White House state G20 Leaders Gala Dinner in honor of Prime Minister Modi.
G20’s Recognition
In a consensus declaration, the G20 states refrained from condemning Russia for the conflict in Ukraine. However, they emphasized the importance of avoiding the use of force to acquire territory. Notably, the declaration also acknowledged the significance of millets. Therefore, stated “We encourage efforts to strengthen research cooperation on climate-resilient and nutritious grains. Such as millets, quinoa, sorghum, and other traditional crops including rice, wheat, and maize.”
This gala dinner not only showcased India’s rich culinary heritage. Moreover, underscored the growing global recognition of millet as a healthy and sustainable food choice.
